GREEN SHOPPING CENTRE SHORTLISTED FOR AWARD

A Wigan shopping centre which has used green technology to reduce its carbon footprint has been shortlisted for a prominent Government award.

Manchester-based developers Modus have been shortlisted in the Low Carbon Development category, (sponsored by the National House-Building Council (NHBC)), in the Creating the Future Awards 2008, which recognise outstanding achievement in the delivery of sustainable communities, for the Grand Arcade shopping centre in Wigan.

The 450,000 sq ft development aims to be the world’s first carbon neutral shopping centre, with the carbon dioxide produced during construction offset via woodland development and wind power generation schemes. To keep carbon levels to a minimum, a green roof, mechanical natural ventilation system, thermal glazing, underfloor heating, movement sensitive lighting and automated toilet flushes have been installed.

Since the centre’s launch in March 2007, Modus has worked with its tenants and shoppers to promote recycling, green energy, and a carbon-neutral lifestyle. All cardboard is recycled, plastic coathangers are reused and biodegradable ‘Bags for Life’ are available.

More than 150 public, private and third sector organisations submitted entries to the awards, which highlight contributions from projects and individuals that help create and maintain better places. Thirty-one projects across England have been shortlisted in seven award categories, including: bringing people together; innovative engagement; inspiring young people; low-carbon development; mixed communities; schools and the community; and vision for place.

The winners will be announced on 5th June 2008 at an awards dinner at the Roundhouse, London.
