Grand Arcade has officially named is inaugural charity partnership of the year for 2022/23. Local charity Joining Jack will join Grand Arcade to raise vital funds and raise awareness for the charity throughout the year. This year is a particularly special as the charity celebrates their 10th anniversary. There will be planned sponsorship activities and fund raising at Grand Arcade Kids Club events. Joining Jack will also be able to use the centre for promotional purposes and increase its profile in the community.

Mike Matthews, Grand Arcade, Centre Manager commented; ‘I am really excited about this partnership and to support such a good, local cause. It’s a great opportunity for us to help Jack, his family and the JJ team to raise important funds and awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).’

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is one of the most common fatal disorders to affect children, approximately one in every 3,500 boys worldwide is afflicted with this muscle wasting disease. Symptoms usually appear in male children before the age of five. Progressive muscle weakness of the legs and pelvis eventually spreads to the arms, neck and other areas. By the age of 10, braces may be required for walking, and most are confined to a wheelchair by age 12 leading to complete paralysis and increasing difficulty in breathing, requiring ventilation. The condition is terminal, and death usually occurs before the age of 30.

Joining Jack commented; “This year marks 10 years of Joining Jack and we’ve always been very
grateful of the support we’ve received from the Wigan community and local business. We have come a long way in this last decade but there’s still a fight to be won against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We’d like to say a big thank you to the Grand Arcade shopping centre for choosing Joining Jack as their charity of the year to help mark this milestone, and raise further
awareness and funds which will help to make a difference for everyone living with Duchenne.”
